Algebraic Geometry and Combinatorics Seminar: Curves in projective space, and elsewhere

Carl Lian, Washington University in St. Louis

Abstract: I will give an introduction to Brill-Noether theory, which attempts to describe the set of maps from a general algebraic curve (Riemann surface) to projective space. I will raise the question of what one might be able to say if the projective space is replaced by some other projective variety, and time-permitting, give a modest answer or two in some special cases.
